Course Name: Westchester Country Club
Location: Between Rye and Harrison in Westchester County, NY
about 20 miles north of NYC.
JNSE design: Steve Gazis
For my first JNSE design effort, I chose to tackle a course right in my own
backyard. I must confess though, that despite it's proximity, I've never
actually seen the course, since I don't golf in "real life". The source
material was The Viewer's Guide to Golf, which aside from hole layouts,
provided excellent descriptions of relevant elevation and terrain features.
About the artwork: All of the objects were borrowed, and only very minor
tinkering was done (a couple instances of "palette clash"). It's impossible
for me to determine the original sources of these objects, so I'd just like
to extend a blanket "Thank you" to people like Mark Willett, Lee Ritze,
Scott Chesney, Ted Maiden, Lee Ritze, Gene Rodriguez III, etc. for making it
possible for the "artistically challenged", such as myself, to design
nice-looking courses.
The background was borrowed from Gabrielle Gardens and recolored slightly.
About the design: I've tried to make the course play as fairly as possible.
Much effort was spent trying to make sure there are no spots where the ball
will drain off the fairway. I've also tried to make sure that all traps and
bunkers are completely visible from the likely approach spots (however, those
who must set their View Resolution to 0 might see things differently in
spots). I've also tried to make the greens play not too severely, except in
those cases where the hole is MEANT to feature a difficult green.
Unfortunately, one of these holes is the 1st. It is designed as a difficult
opening hole with a two-tiered green, and I attempted to design the
green such that landing on the wrong level is truly punitive. If you do find
yourself forced to putt from one tier to the next, rest assured that this
green is NOT representative of the rest of the course.
About the course: Par 71, 6,779 yds. Rated at 73.4 and a slope of 139.
The course plays host to the Buick Classic (known as the Westchester Classic
in the days before corporate sponsorship). First contested in 1967 when won
by Jack Nicklaus; last year's winner David Frost set the 72-hole tournament
record with a 268, winning by 8 strokes. This year's event will be held
June 7-12, serving as the final tuneup for the U.S. Open at Baltusrol.
Feedback is more than welcome (especially if it's positive!). I can be
